昨年の12月26日、世界でも有数の影響力をもつアメリカの新聞誌
「ウォール･ストリート・ジャーナル」で
“ Isn't that Cute? In JAPAN, Cuddly Characters Compete ”
（かわいい？日本のキャラクターたちの競演）
と銘打って、ゆるキャラブームが紹介された。
くまモンが総額25億円相当の経済効果を担っていること、10万人を越えるフォロアーが継続的につぶやきを見守っていることなど、と紹介。それを受けて熊本県知事は「海外展開も視野に」と反応したが、実際の記事のなかでは「くまモン」を「kumamoto」と間違えて紹介するなど、まだまだ道は険しそうだ。
